This one is a staple Marathi breakfast/snack that is quick and easy to make.
Ingredients:
1 cup dry Vatana (whole yellow peas)
1 medium onion chopped and fried
4-5 cloves of chopped garlic (lasun)
1 medium tomatoes
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp Bhajka (or Usal) powder (available in Indian stores)
1 Tbl sp desiccated coconut (suka khobra)
Method:
Make Vatan or spice paste first by grinding some of the fried onion, lasun and suka khobra.
Boil vatana separately. saute garlic(without skin) and onion in oil. Add tomatoes and chilli pwdr, bhajka pd and boiled vatana little salt and let it boil for some time. Then add the vatan. Put more salt for the entire usal bring to a boil adding chopped tomatoes and coriander. Garnish with coriander and serve with warm paav!!
